Café Renovation

Cafés come in many different concepts, feels, theme, and ambience. Sometimes visiting a café is not necessarily due to the café’s aroma-rich coffee, or due to the extensive selection of cakes. Rather, many people frequent a café because it has a good, relaxed environment. After all, cafés are mainly a casual place of relaxation and meet-ups.

We mentioned earlier that lighting is the single most important factor in creating an ambience and feel of an area. It drives the overall “feel” within the premise, while all other factors work together to complement the whole theme.

Practical Considerations

By now, you know that we are about helping you to achieve your objective of lifting your business. You may be an expert in this, but we have come up with a list we feel (from our past experiences) are important to consider:

  1. Seating capacity – are you looking to capitalise on the limited area you have, or you have spaces to spare and can afford some “room” between customers? We have many encounters in both, so you could be certain that we will bring our wealth of experience into your café design;
  2. Children play area – this is a good-to-have, but not a must-have. Nonetheless in serving customers, either be the best or not provide it at all. If you can afford this, consider a more interesting play area instead of running into a potential less utilised areas which could potentially bring in higher revenue;
  3. Furnishing flexibility – Do you prefer flexibility in seating arrangements such that customer groups can be adapted?
  4. Alcove area – Would you be taking events reservation for smaller groups while also letting in the walk-in or regular customers? If so, do you want to design an alcove area to facilitate this plan? It could also serve as a preferred space where customers make reservations to have their own little corners.
  5. Alfresco area – Would additional permits be required? Would you fans and mist-blowers?
  6. Access door from indoors to the alfresco area – would push doors suffices, or do you require automated doors?

Design concepts

One thing we realise over the years about cafés is that sophisticated renovation is usually not required. Otherwise, it would be more like a restaurant renovation. In cosmopolitan Singapore, there is a subtle acceptance by customers towards the more casual and cosy environment.

Graphical elements and pictograms can be created to become something natural, playful and rough, which can lift the moods of patrons. How about themes such as recreating a 60s farmhouse, where nostalgic graphical and physical elements are present to create a time in history, where things are slower and less chaotic. Flooring and ceiling although are often not the main focus, the roughness of it adds a touch of casualness in the exquisite glass and concrete jungle that we’re in.

Regardless, we have the right people and experience to give appropriate advice before carrying out café renovation works.
