Small Spaces

  • In a place like Singapore where small spaces are common, it lifts design approaches up a few notches as the inherent issue presents challenges to the creative process. Architectural and design work for small spaces must achieve the objective of turning a small space to a comfortable and seamless environment for its tenants while reducing the perception of a lack of square feet.

One of the things we advise our clients with small spaces is that visual coherence helps to create a sense of unity within the area. Natural colours such as silver birch plywood combined with large allowances of natural light give warm to the interior, while the wood’s light tone reflects natural light throughout the area.

Modular fittings and furnishings are critical to small spaces as efficient designs will save space and increase space efficiencies.

Due to the rising use of electrical appliances, wires could be framed around the workspace. And if health is a concern, we would also advise cabling shield to eliminate electromagnetic fields.

Air circulation is important too. And if there is a limited ground to ceiling height, sufficient air-circulation installations should be considered as small spaces tend to create stale air easily.

For mezzanine type spaces, it is always preferable to create functional areas yet allowing visual access between them in envisaging a more generous perspective of the space.

If budget allows, rounded corners of furniture and furnishings create a sense of softness within the workspace.

To sum it up, our creative design does not strictly depend on the available floor space.
