Lighting

A space immediately gets the notice of anyone walking in if it is well lit. In a darker environment such as restaurants with dimly lit ambience, furnishings can opt not be perfect, but with the right lighting, most furnishings would look “classy“.

Hence lighting is one element that has to be aligned with the business in question, be it an office, a restaurant, a clinic, or a customer-centric space.

Lighting design comes in 3 types:

  1. Ambient Lighting
Ambient is lighting that fills a space with light. Other than the usual LED lighting or fluorescent light tubes which offices typically adopts in Singapore, there are other lighting options for ambient light: Pendants lights, wall lights (sconces) and floor lamps.
  2. Task Lighting
These are lights which are introduced for the purpose of performing specific work. These include table lamps for reading or spotlight used for intricate work.
  3. Accent Lighting
This lighting is used when there is a beautiful piece of art or décor which is to be displayed and directs attention to visitors and customers. This is part of the overall framework of the interior design approach.

There should be a balance between all of the above 3 lighting types.

The Balance Use of Light

A good designer also needs to balance the use of artificial and natural light. This takes into account the facing of the space, as it relies on information regarding the amount of light it receives at any time of the day for any given area.

In Singapore where most spaces are small, you could consider lighting all corners of the room to make the spaces look bigger while adopting lights with vertical beams to create the perception of height.

Positioning of switches and plugs – this is important as the location of lights, lamps, or switches all have a direct influence on the number and location of power points and switches.

Materials – The types of bulbs used and materials for light fittings must be coordinated. For instance, bulbs come in different light colours: blue and green lighting enhances a cool and peaceful ambience, while red and yellow lights demonstrate a warm and intimate mood. The texture and opacity of the lighting materials need to be coordinated so it forms the overall message and feels within the space.
