How Do I Start?
Renovations for all business owners are a daunting task, not only because of the planning and designing stages but more of the interruptions to business. - Who is my designer/contractor?
- How long is the renovation going to take?
- Where is my restaurant location and clientele, and how are my competitors in this area doing?
- If I have a few stores due for renovation or to be subject to a branding revamp, should I renovate at one go? Or should I do it in stages, so that when I am satisfied with one outlet, I could replicate the concept in other stores?
- How will the revamp or renovation lift my business?
- Should I implement renovation plans for the stores with leases that are expiring soon – in this case, can I renew my lease?
- Can the business afford it? Is financing available?

What does renovation for a Food & Beverage (F&B) establishment cover?
When you are on your way to starting your first F&B outlet, there may be lots of boxes to check in making the outlet a ready-to-go business. From a renovation perspective, we cover the following areas:

- (K) Obtain renovation licences from building management, HDB and/or NEA, whichever is applicable.
Through our deep-rooted experience, we have some practical advice:
- If your F&B outlet is involved in preparing both Halal and non-Halal food, it helps to also consider how you would like the renovation to be planned around the Halal food preparatory area. We have years of experience dealing with this setup, so CommercialRenoSG would have competent team members to provide you adequate advice in this area;
- Ventilation – this should be carefully planned as food preparation may lead to excess heat, condensation or odour within the premises;
- Walls and floors within the food preparation area should be simple, non-porous and easy to clean/maintain;
- Lighting at dining area: Lightings should not have crevices on the side facing the wall to prevent any insects making a nest within, and eventually falling into someone’s soup! If such a lighting is required, make sure all crevices can be covered appropriately;
- Storage areas for chemicals and hazardous materials should be separated from food storage. Such a consideration would have an influence on the layout plan;
- Secondly, as labour in Singapore is somewhat tight, your renovation plans may want to take into account the potential automation of food serving to customers. How much lesser (or more) space, do you require? What kind of automation would you be looking at?
